Crockett PD: Man on parole assaults officer during disturbance call

A Crockett man is behind bars after allegedly physically assaulting a police officer during an arrest.

Byron Handsborough, 26, is charged with Resisting Arrest Search or Transport and Assault on Public Servant after causing injuries to an officer's head, leg and lower extremities.

The incident happened around 6 p.m. on Thursday after officers with the Crockett Police Department were dispatched to the 100 block of Charles Street for a disturbance call.

According to a press release, officers found Handsborough under the influence of some type of illegal narcotic. After several attempts to get Handsborough to calm down, officers tried to arrest him. The press release states that is when he allegedly assaulted the officer.

Sandra Smith, 48, the mother of Handsborough was also arrested and charged with Interference with Public Duties and Assault on Public Servant after she interfered with her son's arrest and also allegedly assaulted the officer.

The press release reveals Handsborough has prior convictions including an Assault on Public Servant charge from March 2010. He was later found guilty of that charge and is currently on parole for that offense until 2016.
