Handicap accessible fishing pier now open at Cassels-Boykin Park

Posted: Updated:

Special changes have come to a popular East Texas fishing spot.

A new handicap accessible fishing pier opened for the first time at Cassels-Boykins park in Zavalla.

The pier has special railing that allows for those in wheelchairs to be able to fish on the water with nothing hindering them.

The project was funded by multiple sources and that is why so many say this is such a special project.

"So many places around the country have been closed, so to have a community, have a county, have so many groups come together to make this happen is absolutely a treasure," U.S. Representative Louie Gohmert.

"I didn't bring my rod and reel today but it is going to be pretty quick," Lufkin resident Joe Harvard said.

County officials say they have researched the special pier and believe it to be the only one in the state of its kind.
