Ex-Navajo president to make another run at office

Posted: Updated:

A former two-term Navajo Nation president is making another run at the office.

Joe Shirley Jr. tells The Associated Press that he will file for the presidency Thursday and focus his campaign on government reform. Thursday marks the start of a monthlong period for Navajos to declare candidacy. Voters also will choose 24 lawmakers this year.

Shirley had sought a third consecutive term in 2010 but was barred by tribal law that states Navajo presidents are limited to two back-to-back terms.

Shirley could be challenged by legislation moving through the Tribal Council that seeks to further define term limits.

Delegate Russell Begaye has introduced legislation to bar any president who has served two terms, consecutive or not, from running again. The legislation also would limit lawmakers to four terms.
