Phoenix man looks for culprit after dog kicked in head, killed

PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A Phoenix man is looking for his dog's killer after he was found dead in the backyard, likely a victim of a kick to the head. His place of work is hoping some reward money will help find whomever's responsible.

"Very friendly, very playful, very energetic," said Jesus Rodriguez, describing his long-haired black and white Chihuahua, Mateo, who he sent to stay with his sister in Laveen near Southern and 51st Avenue about a month ago.

"They have a backyard, they have another dog, they have two little girls that the dog can play with so I thought it was the best thing to do," Rodriguez said.

But yesterday, Rodriguez, who works at the Clarendon Hotel, got a tearful call from his sister.

"There's a little drainage hole at the bottom of the block fence that he would stick his head out from and someone walking by kicked his head and he died," Rodriguez said.

While he doesn't know exactly who's to blame, he thinks it could be kids who have thrown rocks at Mateo in the past.

"We think it might've been just a child showing off, I don't know, maybe he doesn't even know what he did," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez's sister, Erica Marez, said she is now nervous to leave her other dog outside.

"It shouldn't be that way, this is my house, it's my backyard, and it's my dogs that should be out here safe," Marez said.

The Clarendon is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. While Rodriguez said sending a kid to a juvenile detention center isn't his goal, he wants the culprits to know what they did.

"No one should be hurting someone else's pets just because they're barking," Rodriguez said. "Animals bark, they're not hurting anyone."

Phoenix police said they are aware of the case, and Rodriguez will be filing an online report. If you know any information, call police.
