Phoenix dry streak to end; rain on tap for Friday, Saturday

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A strong storm system will move across Arizona on Friday and Saturday, putting an end to a dry streak lasting more than two months in Phoenix.

Thursday will be the last day with high temperatures hovering around 80 degrees.

A few clouds will dot the Valley sky on Thursday with mainly dry conditions and very light showers will fall to the north of the Valley and along the Colorado River, ahead of the storm that will eventually dump rain by Friday night.

Highs in Phoenix on Friday will be in the mid-70s with mostly cloudy skies to start the day. Winds will also pick up ahead of the system and could cause areas of blowing dust before the rains fall.

The much-needed showers will develop by Friday night, starting with isolated thunderstorms and turning to steady rain through the overnight hours with some Valley areas likely to receive anywhere from three-quarters to an inch of rain.

It will be a wet day Saturday, as well with an additional half-inch to 1 inch of rain falling throughout the day. Rain showers will linger on Sunday.

Temperatures will take a nose dive from Friday to the weekend. Highs will only be in the mid-60s Saturday and upper 60s on Sunday.

The precipitation will mainly fall as rain in the high country. Snow levels will remain very high, bringing just a chance of snow on Sunday to Flagstaff.

Northern Arizona will see rainy and windy conditions Friday and Saturday.

The rain will literally put a damper on many weekend events.

After a warm start to Spring Training, baseball fans need to brace for the rain Friday and Saturday.

For NASCAR fans at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, there could be some practice and qualifying events on Saturday delayed or canceled.

Sunday is looking a bit drier with a chance for a few showers for the The Profit on CNBC 500, a 500-kilometer, (312-mile) Sprint Cup race.
