PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Mesa man faces a possible first-degree murder charge in connection with the shooting death of a Phoenix man during an attempted drug buy in December.

Jamaud Williamson, 38, was arrested at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday at a Tempe residence where he was staying, according to an officer's statement.

A witness identified Williamson as one of two men who went to a Phoenix apartment on Dec. 22 to buy drugs when talk turned to selling a handgun to Gnugen Perez.

Perez, Henry Smart III and an unidentified woman were in the apartment and Perez was looking at the unloaded .38-caliber handgun when one of the suspects returned from the bathroom and grabbed a 9mm handgun belonging to Perez, according to the statement.

Fearing for his life, Perez struggled with the man over the 9mm and the second suspect, later identified as Williamson, grabbed the .38, loaded it and shot Perez and Smart, according to the statement.

The woman ran to a bedroom to hide and escaped through a window.

The suspects demanded money and/or drugs and Smart told them they could find them in the kitchen, according to the statement.

An anonymous tipster, who later admitted he was with Williamson at the apartment, told police Williamson was a member of the Bloods street gang, positively identified him in a lineup but denied knowing Williamson was going to shoot Perez or Smart, according to the statement.

Williamson, a convicted felon who was out on parole, was booked into jail on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, armed robbery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a felony weapon by a prohibited person.

He was being held on a $750,000 bond.

Williamson's next scheduled court appearance is 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in Maricopa County Superior Court.
