NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - The Timber Framers Guild will build in March a park pavilion at Lake Naconiche in Nacogdoches County. Anyone interested in learning the old art of joining timbers is encouraged to sign up now.
Large timbers of yellow pine and cypress have been dried and are now being cut at Red Suspenders Timber Framing, a Nacogdoches business owned and operated by Tim Chauvin.
The Nacogdoches Rotary Club is gathering up materials and lodging for the hands on workshop. Participants come from all over East Texas and the nation to instruct and attend.
The goal is to learn an old craft and raise a 32 x 48 foot pavilion within a week.
"This is a great opportunity to learn timber framing from some of the best people in the country doing it. And it's an opportunity to take a week and produce something for the community in the end, but to learn, what you need to learn about timber framing as you do it," said Chauvin. "and then at the very end we'll actually be putting the building up so you learn how you build one of these things in the end and put it up safely."
The build is set for March 20-28.
