The Phoenix Fire Department got a big government grant to help protect the city.

The city was awarded $8 million in a Staffing For Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant from federal officials.

The money will pay for 42 firefighters who were hired back in 2010.

Phoenix firefighters are among the busiest in the nation, responding to more than 171,000 emergency incidents in 2013.
