How you can help Phoenix officers shot on duty

A 21-year veteran with the Phoenix Police Department lost his life Monday and a fellow officer was wounded in a gun battle with a fugitive near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

Communities and organizations throughout the Valley are responding in a big way through donations, fundraisers and support.

Here is a growing list of ways you can help:

  • Danny's Family Car Wash is holding a charity car wash Wednesday to benefit the families of fallen Phoenix Police Detective John Hobbs and injured Phoenix Police Detective A.J. Casados. Free car washes will be given for donations between 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free washes will be available at the Tatum and Cactus location. The address is 12020 N. Tatum Blvd.
  • Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale will be sponsoring a police escorted motorcycle ride of approximately 300 to 400 riders leaving the dealership at noon on Sunday, March 23 to honor fallen Phoenix Police Department Detective John Hobbs. The route will take 101S to 202W to 51N to 101W to 17N to Carefree Highway to Cave Creek Road north to the Hideaway Grill by 1:30 p.m.  At 3 p.m., the Hideaway Grill in Cave Creek will be holding an auction and raffle event with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the 100 Club of Arizona Survivor Fund, a nonprofit charity that directly supports the families of the fallen first responders. There is no registration fee for this ride. Raffle tickets will be available throughout the day for $5 each for prizes such as a Tiffany bracelet courtesy of ED Marshall Jewelers. Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale is donating a no-reserve motorcycle for the auction. Dillon Aero of Scottsdale are donating rifles, Alice Cooper has donated a signed guitar and many more items will be available. Everyone is welcome to drive or ride to the Hideaway Grill by 3 p.m. to participate in this benefit event for the 100 Club of Arizona.
  • The Cactus Park community will hold a prayer and candlelight vigil from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the shooting scene near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road.
  • The Phoenix Suns will host a monetary donation drive on Thursday night at US Airways Center in honor of Hobbs, as well as his wounded partner. Donations will be accepted at all entrances to the center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., prior to the Suns' matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder. All proceeds will benefit the 100 Club of Arizona.
  • Phoenix Law Enforcement Association is hosting a barbecue benefit Thursday at the PLEA garage located at 1102 W. Adam in Phoenix. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. [Related: Thursday barbecue to benefit families of fallen, wounded officers]
  • Donations to the 100 Club can be made by calling the 100 Club office at 602-485-0100 and also through the Arizona Federal Credit Union by calling 602-683-1148.
  • Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) will also host its 10th annual 5K walk/run in memory of fallen officers on Sunday, March 9 at the Wesly Bolin Plaza in Downtown Phoenix. Registration starts at 8 a.m. The event will remember fallen Phoenix police officer John Hobbs and officers lost in 2013, including Phoenix Police Officer Daryl Raetz and DPS officer Timothy Huffman. On April 3, C.O.P.S. will also host its first Arizona Fallen Officer Memorial Golf Outing at Lookout Mountain Golf Club. You can sign up or donate by going to their website, copsarizona.org.

    More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
