(WMC-TV) - The traffic backups in Arkansas stranded people for several hours, and in at least one case, caused two women to miss a very important goodbye.

Pat Warner and her sister, Carol Deming were in Memphis for one reason: to say goodbye to their aunt, Jean Carlson, who died Thursday at 83 years old.

The funeral was Tuesday, but the two women did not make it, despite Deming traveling all the way from Texas.

"I've been here since Saturday, but once we got blocked in with the ice on Sunday, we have not been able to get anywhere," said Deming.

The women were just three miles from the funeral home. It would have normally been a 10 minute drive, but while stuck in the traffic jam, they may have well been a world away.

"And we're missing the funeral right this minute because we couldn't get over to the other side of the interstate," added Deming. "They tried to come and get us. They tried to get to us and they get couldn't even get to us to get us to the funeral because of everything right here."

Sad? Yes. Aggravating? Yes. But Pat and Carol say they made the most of it.

"I got to spend time with my sister I hadn't seen in a long time," said Deming. "So, if that's the best I can come from it, then that's good enough for me."

Even though they did not get to say goodbye to Aunt Jean, Pat and Carol have one heck of a story to tell when they do reach the rest of the family.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
