SFA women's basketball overcomes adversity, trying to win SLC title: 'Tough and together'

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Picked to win the Southland Conference, the Ladyjacks now find themselves scrambling to clinch the championship title.

The Ladyjacks don't have the perfect conference record like the men, but after the trials this team has had to overcome, their 11-5 record is quite impressive after loosing two starters with injuries.

"We lost our starting point guard Brittney Matthew who was averaging 15-16 points a game. Then at the beginning of the season we lost our starting four guard which was LaNesha Middleton," said junior forward Daylyn Harris. "From the beginning of the season we knew we had to have people step up in different positions and play different roles. We needed to step up all together as a team."

The Ladyjacks play with the motto, 'Tough and Together.' A banner with this motto hangs in their locker room and has been quite fitting for the adversity this team has overcome.

"It's a testimate of their character, their toughness, but also their willingness to put the team first," said head coach Brandon Schneider.

The Ladyjacks must win out their next two conference games to get a share of the conference title, but it's a scramble for the women's teams in the Southland Conference for the number one spot. There could potentially be a 3 way tie for the title, if both Lamar and UCA also win out.

"They know what's at stake and these are goals they set a long time ago," said Schneider. "As they get closer, I think the anticipation and excitement builds."

For Porsha Roberts, a team leader who leads the conference in shooting percentage, the goal is simple.

"One game at a time. First beat Oral Roberts. It's one game at a time," said Roberts.

It's time for the Ladyjacks to put on their hard hats, and get to work.

The Ladyjacks will play ORU at 6 p.m. Thursday night in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
