PALESTINE, TX (KLTV) - A former officer with the Palestine Police Department and Overton Police Department was arrested Thursday morning on animal cruelty charges.

Terry Glenn Tawater, 46, was taken into custody around 11 a.m. The Anderson County Sheriff's Office had been searching for Tawater for an unknown period of time before stopping his vehicle during a traffic stop.

Following the traffic stop, deputies searched Tawater's home located at 1636 County Road 415 in Palestine. Fifteen dogs were found inside the home, which Anderson County Sheriff Gregg Taylor described as being in deplorable condition.

Taylor said this is one of the worst cases of animal cruelty he has seen during his career. The dogs chewed through the walls of the home in an effort to escape. Nine of the puppies have been taken to the Humane Society in Palestine. Deputies are trying to catch the remaining six that escaped.

According to the Palestine Police Department, Tawater worked as an officer for their department several years ago and is currently employed as a reserve officer with another East Texas police force. Overton Police Department confirm that Tawater was also an officer with their department at one point.
