TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

A Texarkana family says their son's teacher went too far in disciplining the middle schooler, and his injuries later sent the boy to the hospital.

When sixth grader Raikem Harris, 12, fell asleep during class at Liberty-Eylau Middle on February 10, he says he got a rude awakening.

"The teacher came and sprayed some Windex in my eyes, but he said it was water. But it was burning my eyes and my eyes started turning red," Harris said. "I couldn't see my. My eyes were blurry."

"I don't think that is right to treat any child like that or anybody like that," says Harris's mother Shamekia Smith. She says her son was taken to CHRISTUS St. Michael's Hospital for treatment the day after the alleged incident. His hospital discharge papers indicated that he was seen for eye irritation.

"I wasn't even notified when it happened," Smith said. "If anything [is] going on with my children I need to be made known ASAP [of] anything like that in an emergency situation."

School Superintendent Ben Carson acknowledged the incident has been investigated, but said he is not legally permitted to discuss a personnel matter. Beyond that, the Harris family won't be getting any answers.

"I can simply tell them that we have looked into the matter," Carson said. "It has been investigated and appropriate action was taken."

He would not officially identify the teacher involved or give the outcome of the school district's investigation.

Smith hopes the school will at least take care of the boy's medical bills.

"I am wanting, for the safety of my child and other students, for the teacher to be removed from the campus," she said.
