LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Although the January jobless numbers represented a small increase in unemployment for Angelina and Nacogdoches counties compared to December 2013 figures, they were a marked improvement over the jobless figures for January 2013.
Over the past year, the jobless rate at the state level has gone from 7.0 percent in January of 2013 to the 5.8 percent reported last January. Similar improvements could be seen in the 12-county Deep East Texas Workforce Development Area, which went from 8.5 percent in January 2013 to 6.9 percent in January of this year.
The jobless rates in Angelina and Nacogdoches counties mirrored each other in January and December 2013. Both counties had a 5.6 percent jobless rate in January, compared to a 5.5 percent unemployment figure in December 2013.
In Angelina County, 37,911 people of a work force of 40,152 were employed. Back in January 2013, Angelina County had a 7.0 percent jobless rate.
Nacogdoches County's available work force numbered 30,756 in January. Of that number, 29,042 were employed. Back in January 2013, Nacogdoches County's jobless rate was 6.6 percent.
At the city level, Lufkin and the City of Nacogdoches also saw a small spike in their respective jobless numbers for January, compared to December 2013. Lufkin's unemployment rate went from 5.6 to 5.7 percent. Nacogdoches had a 5.5 percent jobless rate in December 2013 and 5.6 percent in January.
Lufkin's jobless rate was 6.6 percent in January 2013, and the City of Nacogdoches had a 6.9 percent jobless rate.

Houston County: 7.8 percent (9.8 percent)
Jasper County: 9.0 percent (10.8 percent)
Newton County: 10.7 percent (12.9 percent)
Polk County: 7.3 percent (8.9 percent)
Sabine County: 13.0 percent (15.0 percent)
San Augustine County: 9.4 percent (11.2 percent)
San Jacinto County: 6.2 percent (8.4 percent)
Shelby County: 6.4 percent (7.4 percent)
Trinity County: 6.4 percent (7.4 percent)
Tyler County: 9.1 percent (10.8 percent)
