NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - A Nacogdoches man is recovering at a hospital after using a double-bladed knife to cut himself Friday afternoon when police officers caught him vandalizing an apartment.
Sergeant Brent Handy with the Nacogdoches Police Department said around 1 p.m. they received several disturbance calls that a man was "destroying an apartment," at a multi-level, single family duplex located in the 1000 block of E. Main Street.
Once officers arrived on scene, they discovered the possible suspect, a 42-year-old black male who cannot be identified at this time, inflicting "superficial," and "non-life threatening," wounds to himself with the knife.
Handy says officers asked the suspect multiple times to put down the knife, and when he refused several verbal commands officers used "non-lethal weapons," to subdue him.
"At that point, he had hurt himself, and we didn't want him to continue to hurt himself or anyone else," Handy said.
Handy says the entire confrontation lasted only a few minutes, and the suspect was transported via ambulance to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital.
Handy says he believes the man was under the influence. No arrest or charges have been made at this time while the suspect recovers in the hospital. Handy says he does not believe the suspect lived at that duplex.
