Gamecocks defeat Brown 13-0 in first game of doubleheader

Top ranked South Carolina belted out a season-high 18 hits with sophomore infielder DC Arendas driving in a career-high five runs and four Gamecock pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout as Carolina defeated Brown 13-0 in game one of a doubleheader at Carolina Stadium.

South Carolina improves to 13-0 on the year while Brown drops its first game of the season.

Arendas went 3-for-6 with Connor Bright and Grayson Greiner both going 3-for-4 as well. Bright had a pair of doubles as did Elliott Caldwell, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a season-high four RBI. Joey Pankake added two hits as well.

South Carolina junior left-hander Jordan Montgomery improved to 3-0 as he hurled 5.1 scoreless innings with just four hits allowed and no walks while striking out eight batters. Freshman right-hander Reed Scott followed with a perfect 1.2 innings with freshman right-hander Matthew Vogel adding a perfect inning of relief and freshman left-hander John Parke closed it out with a perfect ninth inning. Brown senior right-hander Anthony Galan suffered the loss and is now 0-1 for the year. He allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Carolina jumped on Galan in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead sending 10 batters to the plate in the process. Connor Bright led off the second inning with a double to left field. After a Grayson Greiner base hit to right field advanced Bright to third base, he would score on Brison Celek's RBI single to left field. Elliott Caldwell kept the hit parade going with a RBI double into the gap in right-center scoring Greiner. After a one-out walk to Marcus Mooney loaded the bases, DC Arendas would give Carolina a four-run lead with a base hit to left-center.

The Gamecocks chased Galan in the fifth inning and increased the advantage to seven runs. Singles from Bright and Greiner followed by a walk to Celek loaded the bases. Bright would score on Caldwell's sacrifice fly to center. With two outs and the bases loaded Arendas would knock two more runs in with a single to left field to score Greiner and Celek.

South Carolina also batted around in the sixth inning to score five more runs and extend the lead to 12-0. Greiner drove in his first run with a RBI single with Caldwell driving in two with his second double of the day, Arendas tallying his fifth RBI with a two-out single and Pankake adding a RBI double. Brock Maxwell's two-out RBI single in the eighth inning made it 13-0 in the eighth inning.
