NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Nacogdoches County officials received a surprise Thursday when County Judge Joe English submitted a letter of resignation, effective Friday at 5 p.m. In the resignation letter, English said that he has accepted a position with another county.

"It has been a pleasure working with the court and with all the employees of Nacogdoches County," English said in his letter. "I have always said that the employees are the county's biggest asset, and as I leave this office, that fact remains. I wish you all the best."

The letter of resignation was dated March 13.

In the March 4 primary election, Mike Perry, the Republican candidate for Nacogdoches County Judge, avoided a run-off with his GOP opponents, Donna Finley and Max McCormack. Perry had 3,187 votes, and Finley and McCormack had 1,462 and 1,267 respectively.

Perry will not have a Democratic opponent in the November general election.
