Cold Case of Rosendale: Investigators need your help

(Toledo News Now) -

Thirty years after Dana Rosendale's mysterious death, police now have 'something' to go off of.

After decades of questions, law enforcement investigating a long-mysterious death finally ruled it homicide. So who's the killer - and where do we go from here?

Dana's name faded from the 1982 news headlines not long after the Lucas County Coroner ruled her death 'undetermined.' Last October, family and friends gathered around Rosendale's gravesite as her buried body was exhumed.

The rare and uncommon feat offered a second chance for the Lucas County Coroner's office to perform an autopsy, as well as an anthropological study of her bones.

That autopsy helped investigators come to a new conclustion - she died at the hands of someone else. Her death was a homicide.

"It certainly gives us a starting point for a new investigation," explains Paul Dobson, Wood County Prosecuting Attorney.

It's a ruling Dana's now adult daughter has wanted her entire life.

"I'm happy that it's getting the attention it deserves," said Brittany.

The ruling not only means a new investigation, but also a deeper sense of responsibility to solve a three decades old cold case. That responsibility now falls into the hands of local law enforcement.

Wood County Prosecuting Attorney Paul Dobson made a special point to make it clear who exactly is behind this death investigation.

"Not any one person is driving this investigation. If there's anybody to be upset at it's the Northwood Police Department and the Wood County Prosecutor's office. We're the ones who will ultimately prosecute."

Meanwhile, the Wood County Prosecutor's office is undergoing a change in staffing.

For 36 years, John Helm has served as the lead investigator on many cold cases and homicides, including Rosendale's. But he's now marking a new beginning--retirement.

"There will always be cases. There will be a new case tomorrow. It's a personal and professional decision to retire," shared Helm.

Doug Kinder--a longtime Perrysburg Township detective and investigator will hit the ground running following Helm's departure on Rosendale's death investigation and many other cold cases.

Investigators need help from the community to solve this case, and they're asking you to step forward if you know anything that could help.

If you have a tip that could help in the investigation of Dana Rosendale, please contact the Northwood Police Department at 419-691-5053 or the Wood County Prosecutor's Office at 419-354-9250.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
