LeTourneau University Student Center opens months early

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

It's finished, and it's finished early, which is surprising for such a big project.

We're talking about the Anna Lee and Sidney Allen Family Student Center at LeTourneau University. They cut the ribbon and let the students get familiar with the facility.

Sixty-five thousand square feet is a lot of space to hang out in. There's pretty much room for everyone, even the huge crowd that gathered to see the building open.

Dale Lunsford, President of LeTourneau University says the student body has been abuzz about the Allen Family Student Center.

"We've got a strong, large residential student body here. They come from all 50 states, and this will be their home away from home during their stay here," Lunsford said.

Students have watched the project come up from nothing. The center has been referred to as LeTourneau University's living room, but it's pretty much the whole house with a dining area, media room, gaming center and collaboration rooms where students can study in groups.

Carly Robinson is a LeTourneau senior, future teacher, and student body president. She feels fortunate to be able to use the center for the rest of the year.

"The collaboration rooms, I think, will be one of the first rooms to be filled on a consistent basis, but I just heard one student saying they wish they were more of a gamer because the new recreation room is so fantastic," Robinson stated.

And if the students work up an appetite, well, that can be taken care of pretty easily.

"I would love to try the new food here. I think that's one of the things students have been talking about the most. But definitely explore, there's a lot of varieties in what's offered and goes on in the building," Robinson said.

Carly and the rest of the seniors are especially pleased. They didn't think they would get to use the facility but it was completed three months early.

If you're in south Longview around lunch time you might want to stop by LeTourneau and check out the food. Although it's a student center, its restaurant is open to the general public.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
