BUCKEYE, AZ (CBS5) -

An Arizona prison inmate's death is being called an apparent homicide after he was attacked by several other inmates at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis in Buckeye on Monday.

Alexander Clark, 27, was attacked about 6 p.m. in the prison's medium security Bachman Unit, according to an Arizona Department of Corrections news release.

Corrections officers saw about 20 inmates gathered in the recreation yard and watched as several of them began to fight, according to the release.

Officers saw Clark on the ground after they broke up the fight and locked the unit down.

Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at an area hospital, according to the release.

Corrections Director Charles Ryan said a criminal investigation was underway.

Clark was sentenced in Pima County in 2006 for burglary, robbery, armed robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault and misconduct with weapons.
