Parents of fallen ETX soldier receive medals

QUITMAN, TX (KLTV) -

Almost three years after their son died serving in Afghanistan, Gerald and Brenda Powell receive their son's medals.

U.S. Army Sergeant Joshua Powell was killed in the line of duty in 2011.

U.S. Congressman Jeb Hensarling awarded the medals, one of them a Purple Heart, to the Powells.

June 4th, 2011 is a day they won't forget.

"I knew something was up that day, and when I opened the door I knew," Gerald Powell said. "I just had a feeling."

Sergeant Joshua Powell served five tours....Kosovo, Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. He became injured on his last tour, and went back to continue serving.

"I kind of went to pieces," Brenda Powell said. "He told me that he never did get to come home that time. They called and told us. It took two days to talk to him. They were rough."

It didn't come as a surprise when at the age of 18, Joshua talked to his parents about serving his country. It was something he had looked forward to since he was a boy.

"I tried to get him to change his mind," Brenda said.

"Everybody was against him and I told him you have to follow your heart," Gerald added.

The family describes him as someone who enjoyed a good practical joke, maybe a little ornery at times, but the one who always had your back.

His absence will forever impact his mom and dad, his sacrifice a nation.
