JASPER, TX (KTRE) - A 34-year-old man is serious condition in a Houston hospital after he was shot in the shoulder during a scuffle for a shotgun that occurred at a house in Jasper early Wednesday morning.

Jasper Police officers arrested Joshua Turley, 18, for aggravated assault. However, he has not been formally charged at this time, according to Chief Robert MacDonald of the Jasper Police Department. At this time, authorities do not know if the shooting was intentional or in self defense.

MacDonald said the shooting incident occurred at 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday at a house in the 300 block of East Childers Street. The victim, Ricky Mitchell, had been partying before the shooting happened. He left, came back, and then got into a disagreement, MacDonald said.

Mitchell allegedly got into a struggle with Turley over a shotgun, and that was when he was shot.

MacDonald said Mitchell is not doing very well. He was taken from Jasper to a hospital in Beaumont. He was later airlifted to a Houston hospital, where he is unconscious and listed in serious condition.
