LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Investigators with the Lufkin Police Department are looking into a possible sexual assault involving a female resident of Grace Care Center on John Redditt Drive Tuesday.
"We're cooperating with local authorities and state investigators and have no other comment at this time," said Jeff Fatheree, the adiminstrator of Grace Care Center.
According to Detective J.B. Smith, a spokesman for the Lufkin Police Department, LPD officers were dispatched to Lufkin's Memorial Hospital at approximately 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in response to a possible assault involving a resident of Grace Care Center.
Sometime between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday, a staff member at Grace Care Center found a female resident with scratches to her face and chest, Smith said. The victim also indicated that she was feeling pain in her pelvic region.
"Due to the resident's mental health condition, she has not communicated what caused the scratches or what, if anything, else occurred," Smith said.
Smith said the victim was transported to Memorial Hospital in Livingston, and a sexual assault exam was performed. He said the examining nurse observed injuries consistent with sexual assault.
When LPD detectives investigated further, they learned that the victim had been involved in an argument with and threatened by a male resident of Grace Care Center.
"Through their investigation, the detectives found probable cause for the issuance of a search warrant to obtain DNA from a possible suspect," Smith said. "The search was executed and a DNA sample was collected.
