LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Green grass, a Frisbee, and maybe even a tennis ball might be accompanying you and your furry friend this spring. But veterinarian's at the Lone Star Veterinary Clinic in Lufkin are warning of an unwelcome visitor: the heartworm.
On Saturday, the clinic will be hosting a free heartworm clinic for clients and new clients.
"If they are positive we'll consult the different options that are available for the client, as well as, for their finances," Krystal Harper, a veterinary technician, said.
They will also offer pro-heart, which is a six-month vaccination and will be giving vaccinations at a discounted price.
They say dogs are usually the most common animal to get the pesky worm, but cats are prone to heartworm's, as well.
"In East Texas, if they are going to be outside, it's a very high possibility that they will get it. How it works is that the mosquito will bite the dog, it will start a three-month growth period, turn into a worm, get in the heart and can lead to some fatal—it can be fatal," Harper said.
Baby Dog Rescue will also be at the event with a handful of rescued puppies ready for adoption.
Lone Star Veterinary Clinic is located at 2610 Brentwood Dr. behind Cavendar's Boot City. Their contact number is (936) 632-2080.
