Hundreds of SFA students participated in the 'Big Event'

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Hundreds of Stephen F. Austin students put down their books Saturday and spent the day helping out Nacogdoches residents.

Over 1,200 SFA students participated in the 9th annual Big Event. The student arrived around noon and split up into teams of five and then went around town doing community service projects for those in need. Lauree Weatherly's group helped her with some chores around the house.

"They were sweeping leave, cleaning out the flower bed.. basically things I can't do anymore," Weatherly said.

SFA students weren't the only ones getting their hands dirty. The event, which started more than 30 years ago at Texas A&M, has now expanded to over 110 colleges around the world. Brittany Mack has participated in the event for the last few years and said it's something that she looks forward to every year.

"It's a day full of service. It's full of fun. Being out here reminds me of when I was a kid. When my parents were outside we were outside. They had us doing yard work and everything," Mack said.

For Britany Griffin this was her first year participating.

"I feel like I am getting to know people around the community. You know getting off of campus and getting out and around town," Griffin said.

These SFA students definitely put a smile on Weatherly's face.

"I think it's real nice of them to be here on a Saturday afternoon instead of at the mall or out doing something else. Instead they are here," Weatherly said.

"She was very warm and inviting she gave us a hug the moment we got here and then gave us some tools and said have at it," Mack said.

Many of the projects were completed within a three to four hour span but Mack said their work isn't over just yet.

"I plan on coming back and seeing what else she has because it's a whole lot of yard work," Mack said.
