Orleans Parish inmate dies after fight in 'The Tents'

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - An Orleans Parish Prison inmate died after a fight with another inmate.

On March 22 a fight broke out between 40-year-old Willie Lee and another inmate in the temporary housing units known as "The Tents" at 10:22 p.m.

According to police, deputies quickly broke up the fight and the inmates were transported to separate tent facilities. The victim had no visible signs of injury, but roughly five minutes later he said he was having difficulty breathing, then collapsed.

Lee was taken to Interim LSU Hospital by ambulance where he died at 12:17 a.m. on March 23. An autopsy by the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office showed that Lee had extensive heart disease and died from cardiac arrest.

"We are saddened when we lose an inmate in our care and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family," Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman said in a press release. "Although it is infrequent, the death of an inmate is an unfortunate reality that all jails face, and one we continuously strive to prevent."

Lee was being held in prison on a $20,500 on charges of Simple Criminal Damage, Unauthorzied Entry into an Inhabited Dwelling and Criminal Trespassing after being formally charged on March 16.
