Shooting victim's mother: 'My baby didn't deserve to die, that's my only son'

MARSHALL, TX (KLTV) -

East Texas law enforcement is on the lookout for a suspect who allegedly killed one victim and wounded another in an early morning shooting. It happened at around 2:45 Sunday morning in the parking lot of a strip mall in Marshall in the 100 block of west Pinecrest.

Just before 3 a.m. Sunday, Marshall police were called to shots fired outside the Rumors Arcade. Police say an altercation spilled outside into the parking area, where a gun was produced. A flurry of shots were fired with several crashing though the windows of local businesses. Two people were hit and the suspect fled the scene. The suspected shooter was identified as 31-year-old Corey Lamar Johnson of Jefferson, who disappeared into the night.

Upon arrival, officers found 19-year-old Jalen Juwan White of Marshall and another victim had suffered gunshot wounds. White was taken by ambulance to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Marshall where he later died from his injuries.

"My baby didn't deserve to die, that's my only son, that's my first born, that's my baby," says White's mother Latisha Broadnax.

The other victim, who has not been named, was hospitalized but their condition has not been released.

An extensive search of the area came up empty.

"Shot my son, I don't understand why, he didn't have to take my son's life. It's a senseless crime for nothing. Why?

Investigators have information that Johnson's may try to flee to California or Nevada.

A murder warrant has been issued for Johnson in connection with the shooting death.

If you have seen Corey Johnson or have any information on where he might be, you need to call the Marshall police department right away.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
