SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) -

A jeep traveling recklessly down a busy Slidell road hit a school bus, lost control and flipped into the parking lot of an Ace Hardware store leaving the driver in critical condition, according to police.

It happened around Monday around 11 a.m. in the 3000 block of Pontchartrain Dr.

The jeep was traveling south when it clipped the bus, which did not have any children on it at the time. The jeep crossed over the northbound lanes of the road and struck a parked car, pushing it back more than 100 feet. The jeep then flipped and landed on two other vehicles.

Only the driver of the jeep was injured. That person was taken to University Hospital in New Orleans.

It is unclear why the driver of the jeep was driving so fast, according to Slidell police.

Officers do not think the driver was not wearing a seat belt, and authorities do not know if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

The driver's identity has not been released.
