Darren Sharper ordered to remain in jail without bond

Updated:

LOS ANGELES, CA (WVUE) - Former Saints player Darren Sharper will remain in a Los Angeles jail without bond. A judge decided Monday to hold Sharper because she hadn't received a governor's warrant for extradition from Arizona, where Sharper is facing additional drug and sexual assault charges.

Sharper's attorney asked the judge to release the former football player on house arrest, but the judge denied it.

Prosecutors in Arizona now say they're seeking to get a governor's warrant to extradite him. They'll have between 30 and 60 days to do that.

In the meantime, prosecutors in Los Angeles told the judge that they intend to try him first. Sharper has already pleaded not guilty to drug and rape charges there.

While he posted bail on those charges, a judge decided two weeks ago to hold him without bond on separate drug and sexual assault charges stemming from an alleged attack that happened in Tempe, Arizona.

That's when the Arizona grand jury indicted Sharper on two counts of sexual assault and three counts of administering dangerous drugs.

According to the Tempe police report, two women claim Sharper drugged them and sexually assaulted them after a night of partying last November. A third woman claims she was drugged by Sharper too but locked herself in a bedroom before falling asleep.

Sharper is being investigated for similar crimes in Nevada, Florida and New Orleans.

"We are continuing to investigate this particular case and the allegations against Mr. Sharper," said District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro.

While Sharper hasn't been officially charged in New Orleans for the alleged aggravated rape of two women, Cannizzaro said the investigation into what happened is expanding. He said his office is working toward interviewing all of the alleged victims in other states.

He said the law allows for the testimony of alleged victims from other jurisdictions to be admitted into evidence if it's deemed to show a pattern of behavior.

In the meantime, there's no indication of when possible charges against Sharper will be brought in New Orleans.

Sharper's next hearing is scheduled in Los Angeles on April 15.
