Potential employees line up for jobs at N.O. East Walmart

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The bricks and mortar for a new Walmart in New Orleans East have been in place for a while. Now the people who will work there are building their futures. The new hiring site for the store on Bullard opened Monday, the first step to hundreds of jobs in the area.

"For a long time the East has been forgotten," said Ernest James. He stood in line at the hiring center hoping to score a job for his son.

"He's going to college in the fall. In the meantime, I want him to do something productive and learn a good work ethic."

He was one of dozens of people waiting outside the center for work opportunities, months before the New Orleans East store opens.

"There are people lining up to see how to get close to Walmart," said Councilman James Gray. "You are going to see this whole Bullard strip develop in the near future."

The mayor calls the Walmart another piece in the resurgence of an area pummeled by Katrina.

"Right around June 1 the hospital is going to open. They're in the process of hiring folks. There are 300 people working on that job site right now," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. He pointed to the opening of the OMV a couple of months ago. "The East is really coming back."

A Kenner Walmart shift manager came to the hiring site to speak about the opportunities for not only a job at the store, but a career. He has worked for Wal-Mart since 2007.

"I'd like to thank Wal-Mart for believing in me and for believing in the 300 people that will be working in the New Orleans East store."
