Marigny mom hopes video leads to daughter's robber

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The video shows a young couple waiting for a cab on Mandeville Street early Saturday morning. A man passes by twice, then comes back and pulls out a gun.

The two victims weren't hurt, but the robber got away with a wallet and phone. Now the mother of one of the victims hopes surveillance video from her home will help catch the man New Orleans police say is responsible for the attack and another one nearby.

Just 45 minutes after the Mandeville Street incident, police say the same man held up a victim at Marigny and Dauphine.

"On this person's path that they probably took from the mugging the other night, I bet you he must have passed between at least five other sets of cameras," said the victim's mother. "Now, if the police can look on an online map or however they do it and see where those cameras are, then they can contact the residents and ask them, 'do you have better footage?'"

That's why she registered her surveillance system with SafeCam NOLA and hopes other people will do the same.

The program that launched earlier this month provides information to New Orleans Police about the location of cameras on private property. SafeCam NOLA is free, and registration only takes a few minutes.

It does not give police direct access to a camera feed.

"The NOPD, nor the city of New Orleans, nor the Police and Justice Foundation has any access to people's videos unless they say to us, 'yes, come look at my video,'" says NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas.

The mother of the robbery victim never thought these surveillance cameras would capture a crime involving her own family.

"It's not something I ever wanted to think of," she said. "I'm glad they're there. I'm sorry it happened, but I'm glad I caught it. I'm not left feeling as helpless as I would have been before."
