NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Police have arrested a man for allegedly selling fake parking passes at lots in downtown Nashville.

The latest incident happened at the lot on 2nd Avenue and Broadway.

Police say Larrie Carroll posed as a parking lot attendant and sold passes he made. He was caught when a parking lot employee says he tried selling a parking pass to them.

Police say they found 23 fake passes in Carroll's pockets after a search.

Carroll, who has been arrested 16 other times in connection to similar incidents, was charged with criminal simulation.

Teresa Belisle says she was ripped off by a parking scam a few years ago.

"Guy walks over to me, and I hand him the money to park. And he had the orange vest and looked all official," she said.

Unfortunately, in cases like this, the driver is still responsible.

"I paid him plus I paid for a parking ticket," Belisle said.

There are some important tips to keep in mind to avoid getting scammed.

First, if there is a automatic pay station, there won't be attendants. During special events, some lots use flaggers to direct traffic.

Second, always look at your ticket before putting in on your dash. Make sure the company name matches the one on the sign at the lot and make sure the printed time is correct.

And, it sounds simple, but read the lot's signs and use good judgment.

"I'll try to park either where I am parking inside a parking garage or I'll park where I put the money inside those little things. I won't give nobody money anymore," Belisle said.

The scam is more than just a frustration. Some parking lots have been placing boots on cars without the proper ticket on the dash. So you can't leave the lot without paying a $50 fine.
