St. Tammany Parish requests former coroner repay $200K

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - St. Tammany Parish wants money from former coroner Peter Galvan.

The parish has requested that he repay more than $200,000 his office paid two law firms to defend him in his corruption case.

"The memorandum that was filed with U.S. District Court speaks for itself," said Pat Brister, St. Tammany Parish president. "We firmly believe that over $200,000 charged to the Coroner's Office was to defend an individual in the Grand Jury indictment. That is public money being spent to defend one person, not an office."

"He should be liable for the money that was spent to do his dog-and-pony show in trying to get out of this," said Rick Franzo with Concerned Citizens of St. Tammany.

"Yes he was the coroner at that time, but the crimes that he committed had nothing to do with making a mistake as the coroner. This was expending public funds inappropriately, and that money should have never been paid by the coroner's office," said Terry King, who first raised concerns about former St. Tammany Coroner Peter Galvan.

A hearing on the matter is set for April 9.

A judge sentenced Galvan to two years in prison for conspiring to steal public money for his personal use.

The sentence comes after a series of FOX 8 reports exposed his questionable spending.
