Bronson man drowns while fishing at Toledo Bend Reservoir

SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A man drowned while on a fishing trip at the Toledo Bend Reservoir in Shelby County Thursday afternoon.

According to Shelby County Sheriff Willis Blackwell, they responded to an emergency call in the Ragtown Recreational Area around 12:30 p.m.

Blackwell said around 10 a.m. Kenneth White of Pineland, 49, and Ronald Clegg of Bronson, 63, were trot lining fishing when their boat caught a stump and capsized.  White was able to swim to the bank for help, while Clegg held on to the boat and waited for help to arrive.

The Sheriff said the waves were 3 to 3 ½ feet high and water temperatures were at 55 degrees.

Blackwell said Clegg waited in the cold elements for several hours before help arrived.

He suspected Clegg possibly died from either exposure to the cold elements or he lost consciousness and drowned.

Clegg's body was recovered around 1:30 p.m.  "It was a fishing trip that turned into a drowning, no foul play suspected," said Blackwell.

White was not taken to the hospital, he is said to be in good condition.  Both men were wearing life jackets.
