Burned body found in fire pit, homeless man charged

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Jessie Scales, 52, is charged with criminal homicide for the death of a man found this morning at a homeless camp under the I-65 overpass near Thompson Lane.

Police say Scales walked into a Mapco on Franklin Pike this morning and told the clerk he just killed someone.

Officer's found the victim's badly burned body in a fire pit.

The Medical Examiner is working on making a positive identification.

But for now, the victim has been identified as a 57-year-old homeless man.

Police reports say that Scales admitted  that prior to putting the victim in the fire pit he struck him multiple time with a shovel, so he could take the victim's money.

Scales has a long arrest history and convictions for aggravated assault, vandalism and disorderly conduct.
