SULPHUR SPRINGS, TX (KLTV) - East Texas authorities are now investigating a possible child abuse case after a three-month-old baby was taken to a local hospital early Wednesday morning.

According to Lieutenant Criminal Investigator Rusty Stillwagoner with the Sulphur Springs Police Department, 20-year-old Robert James Aufdenburg and 19-year-old Katie Lynn Maynard are both charged with serious bodily injury to a child by reckless omission.

Aufdenburg and Maynard took their three-month-old baby to Hopkins County Memorial Hospital around 1:30 a.m. Emergency room personnel observed that the infant had second and third degree burns on its head and right foot. The baby also had a fractured arm and a blunt force fracture to the lower right leg.

Due to the nature of the baby's injuries, hospital staff contacted Sulphur Springs police. Both Aufdenburg and Maynard were interviewed by Investigator Stillwagoner. The interview revealed probable cause to arrest them both.

Stillwagoner said the child's burn injuries occurred sometime Monday afternoon and the parents failed to seek treatment for the infant. Police will continue to investigate the incident further. The infant has been taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

The couple also has an 18-month-old child who is in the care of a paternal grandparent in Nevada.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
