NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - The memory of little Dane Shaw, a 4-year-old Nacogdoches boy who died in a house fire in June 2013, will live on thanks to a generous donation by his family.
At Tuesday night's city council meeting, Dane Shaw's family donated $40,000 for new playground equipment that will be installed at a park at the Nacogdoches Youth Baseball Complex located off of Old Tyler Road.
The park, which is located between the Stephen F. Austin State University field and the T-ball field where Dane used to play, will be re-named the Dane Memorial Park. City officials said the new playground equipment should be ready in a couple of months.
Dane and his grandmother, Gina Langley, 52, died in a house fire on Dorr Creek Street in Nacogdoches on June 1, 2013. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the home fully engulfed in flames.
Dane and his grandmother were found inside the home after firefighters extinguished the blaze.
Since the June 2013, residents of Nacogdoches rallied around the family members of the little boy and his grandmother. The Adventure Island Day Care planted a tree in Dane's honor. In addition, an online fundraiser was set up for the family, and a benefit auction was held.
