LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A big check was donated to Buckner Family Place in Lufkin Wednesday afternoon by State Representative Trent Ashby and the Texas State Affordable Housing Corporation in Austin.

Marisa Phillips, the administrator for the facility, announced that Buckner Family Place has served 350 families over the past 16 years saying the $15,000 grant will not only provide supportive services to the 40-unit residential facility that serves low-income single parent families, but will help the program focus more on higher education.

David Long, the president of TSAHC, says he is pleased to help the facility out.

"I must way, when we walked up from the parking lot—it's a beautiful facility, the surroundings, the facilities. They're phenomenal, and we're very, very pleased and excited to know that the money is going to a facility that is doing such good work," Long said.

Ashby adds that the grant is a great addition to the community.

"This grant is going to help the community-it's going to help the residents, the Buckner Family Living Place to allow them to go to college, full-time. it will allow their children to access the daycare that's provided here at the facility so it really completes the package especially for women who want to find self-sufficiency to take that next step and to get a degree and to go out and to earn a decent living," Ashby said.
