VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) -

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot to death in Memphis, TN, 46 years ago Friday.

His legacy lives on around the world and now at the University of Southern Indiana.

A thank you note from King, with his signature, was discovered by a student during an archiving class at the USI Library Archives.

"He pulled the letter out and then he said, 'I think I have a Martin Luther King, Jr. signature.' And we were all like, 'yeah right.' And he's like, 'no I think I have a Martin Luther King, Jr. signature.' And of course we all rushed over and looked at it," said USI's Reference and Archives Librarian, Jennifer Greene.

Greene wondered if the signature was real.

"While I'm not an expert, I have examined this and I have examined examples of his signature and it does look like an authentic signature."

The thank you note is about a $567 donation to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference from a communal group in New York.

Dated July 1963, it says in closing, "I am confident that if we continue to gain this type of support, this sweltering summer of discontent can be transformed into an invigorating autumn of justice and freedom for all people."

Greene plans to display the note in as many exhibits whenever she can.

Otherwise, it will go into an archive folder in an archive box kept in USI's environmentally-controlled preservation room.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
