EAST CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

An elderly woman has died and several others are hospitalized after a CO leak Friday afternoon at an apartment building in East Cleveland.

"I had to take 17 flights of stairs... and I see a little girl on a stretcher. I see all kinda of stuff," said Clifton Dorroh.

East Cleveland Firefighters were contacted by University Hospitals at around 4 p.m. on April 4, and advised to respond to the Crystal Towers located at 16000 Terrace Road.

The medical staff reported to ECFD that just before noon, they had seen several patients come in with similar symptoms from the same location and all were linked to carbon monoxide exposure. Their conditions are unknown.

Building management says that they evacuated all 278 units -- nearly 500 people.

"We get downstairs and firefighters are down there," said seventh floor resident Clifton Dorroh. "Five to ten minutes later we see the firefighters bringing people down on stretchers, sheets and things like that."

The deceased victim has been identified as 79-year-old Barbara Kelley. Her cause of death has not been determined.

RTA transported residents from Crystal Towers to the Martin Luther King Civic Center on Shaw Avenue and the Helen S. Brown Senior Citizen Center on Euclid. Red Cross was on hand to assist them.

The exact cause of the leak has not been revealed.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
