TBI releases 2013 report on college campus crimes

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Tennessee college students are getting a little safer on campus, according to a new report from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation looking back at 2013.

The number of crimes reported to police dropped 11 percent since 2012, and the number of thefts continued to decrease. It was down more than 16 percent last year.

But other specific types of crime may be cause for some worry. Reports of burglaries and robberies are up, with robberies seeing a spike of nearly 30 percent.

And the number of forcible sex offenses had been declining in previous years but suddenly spiked by 25 percent in 2013.

The report covers college campuses and student housing in Tennessee.

The TBI says the information will guide crime-fighting efforts at those schools.
