Residents advised to be prepared for spring's weather swings

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Southeast Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast escaped major storms during Friday's severe thunderstorm watch, but there is another chance for severe storms Sunday.

The National Weather Service office issues official warnings, and the FOX 8 Weather Team joined the office to monitor Friday's event and discuss the best ways to keep your family safe through the season.

Getting ahead of the storm is important. Springtime can bring dangerous weather. On March 28, flash floods plagued many, and this week is ending with a big tornado outbreak.

"That big clash, you always hear that big clash of the warm and the cold. It really is and we have to watch out for it," said Ken Graham, Meteorologist in Charge at the National Weather Service office in Slidell.

Hail, tornadoes, heavy wind and rain pummeled areas from Illinois and Missouri to Texas.

The conditions underscore just how important it is to be prepared. As we move from winter to spring, the cold air battles with the warm moist air, creating the perfect set-up for strong storms.

"We advertise these severe weather events ahead of time," Graham said. "There's no surprises anymore."

Simple things like having a weather radio can make a big impact.

"The weather radio will alert you 24 hours a day,"Graham said. "In the middle of the night if we put out a warning, the weather radio will go off and that's the time to spring into gear. Practice it. Actually take your family and say 'Hey, we have a tornado warning. What do you do?'"

If you do get caught out in a storm, err on the side of caution: Turn around, don't drown. Avoid standing water and know the safest room in your home. That's the one with no windows and the most walls between you and outside. All are key to surviving severe weather season. The best thing to do as severe weather approaches is get to a sturdy structure and monitor the weather until the storm passes.
