LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Three men were shot near Winston Park early Wednesday morning. Investigators with the Lufkin Police Department believe the incident was gang-related.
According to a press release, Lufkin Police officers were dispatched out to Lufkin's Memorial Hospital at approximately 12:15 a.m. in reference to three gunshot victims who arrived at the emergency room.
"From the information gathered by detectives, it appeared that the shooting was gang related," the press release stated.
Two of the victims, Uric Godet and Trasmin Perkins, both of Lufkin, sustained leg injuries. Both men were treated for their injuries and released.
The third victim was shot in the back, according to the press release. Shortly after that man arrived at the hospital ER, he was airlifted by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.
Sgt. David Casper of the Lufkin Police Department said they did not identify the third man because the name they were given turned out to be an alias.
Casper says after interviews with several third party witnesses at the hospital, detectives believe the shooting was gang related.
"Talking with witnesses and people that showed up at the hospital that may not have had first hand information just word of mouth and they've had a lot of names throw around," said Casper.
According to the 2013 crime report the number of violent crimes in Lufkin were the lowest they've been in a decade.
But Casper says due to staffing issues they aren't able to document what incidents involve gang.
"We used to have officers that had a gang data base and kept different info as far a gang members and kept different statistics as far as crimes gang members we involved in," said Casper.
Lufkin Police Department detectives were notified and responded to the scene. During the initial portion of the investigation, detectives learned that the incident occurred in the vicinity of Winston Park located at 1009 Clinton Street in Lufkin.
"They located different caliber shell cases at the scene there," said Casper.
The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made at this time.
Anyone with information pertaining to the shooting is urged to contact the Lufkin Police Department at (936) 633-0356.
