Angelina all-stars looking for Pineywoods Showdown win; motivated by Boys& Girls Club

DIBOLL, TX (KTRE) - When the Angelina Girls All-Starstake the court for the annual Pineywoods Showdown, they do so with addedmotivation after a recent trip to the Boys & Girls Club of Diboll.

"They see what theyare giving back to as well so my hope is it means more to them after being heretoday," coach Laura Jones said.

"I want to win forthem instead of me," Zavalla senior Caitlyn Lambert said. "When you areshooting a shot or making a shot, it's not just for you but for them too."

The Boys and Girls club ofDeep East Texas serves over 1,000 kids. The club Offers after school and summer programs with the hope of bringingout the full potential in each of them.

After the camp, CoachJones said it is hard to see who benefited the most.

"It's just funwatching them interact," Jones said. "I don't know who was more excited, thehigh school kids or the young kids."

"They're amazing"Lufkin senior Tiara Robinson said. "They just love the sport like I do. Itmakes it more fun."

"I like seeing themsmile when they do something right or they're happy when they win acompetition," Central senior Shelby Finch said.

Through summer leagues,many of these all stars have actually played on the Diboll court and hope theyare inspiring future squads.

"They're learninglife skills, like giving back to those who tolerated you as a kid and saw yougrow and mature," Diboll Director Eric Hernandez said.

"Hopefully a lot ofthese kids will be playing [in the showdown] in five, six or seven years,"Jones said.

Thursday night, the girls hope to do morethen inspire and win money for the group.

The sixth annual Pineywoods Showdown betweenthe all-stars of Angelina and Nacogdoches Counties start at 6 p.m. at CentralHeights High School in Nacogdoches. The boys game will follow the girls game. Ticketsare $5. Children five years-old and under are free.

All the proceeds will go to charity.

The Angelina girls are playing for the Boys & Girls Club. The Angelina boys are playing for Harold's House. The Nacogdoches girls are playing for Godtel. The Nacogdoches boys are playing for Glory Gang.
