Two E. Texas inmates injured after transport van crashes

WHARTON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Two East Texas men were injured after an inmate transport van crashed in south Texas on Thursday morning.

According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the wreck occurred on Highway 59 north of Victoria near Blue Creek Road. Two TDCJ sergeants were transporting three offenders from the Connally Unit in Kennedy to the Jester IV Unit in Richmond when the transport van crashed.

Although TDCJ has not released the identities of those involved in the accident, they confirmed that one man injured is serving a five-year sentence for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon out of Smith County. Another inmate is serving a 25-year sentence for robbery out of Angelina County.

The other injured inmate is serving a three-year sentence for burglary of a habitation out of Harris County.

The man sentenced in Angelina County was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston with non-life threatening injuries. The two other inmates and two sergeants were taken by ambulance to the El Campo Hospital.
