Angelina, Nacogdoches counties see improvements in their jobless rates

Mirroring the statewide trend, Angelina and Nacogdoches counties saw significant improvements in their jobless rates for the month of March.

At the statewide level, Texas' improving jobless rate could a symptom of an improving economy. The Lone Star State's unemployment figure dropped from 5.9 percent in February to 5.3 percent in March.

Angelina County's unemployment rate dropped from 5.6 percent in February to 5.1 percent in March. The county had an available workforce of 40,424, and of that number, 38,353 were employed in the month of March. In March 2013, Angelina County's jobless rate was 6.2 percent.

To the north, Nacogdoches County saw a similar improvement in the month of March. The county's unemployment went from 5.7 percent in February to 5.2 percent in March. Breaking down the numbers that meant 29,438 people from an available workforce of 31,055 were employed in March. Back in 2013, Nacogdoches County's jobless rate was 6.1 percent.

The City of Lufkin saw its jobless rate go from 5.8 percent in February to 5.1 percent. Lufkin had an available workforce of 16,548, and of that number, 15,697 were employed in March. In March 2013, the City of Lufkin's unemployment rate was 6.2 percent.

Things are also looking up for the City of Nacogdoches, which went from 5.6 percent in February to 5.2 percent in March. The city's available workforce was 16,265, and of that number, 15,424 were employed in March. Back in March 2013, the City of Nacogdoches had a 6.1 percent jobless rate.

The 12-county Deep East Texas Workforce Development Area saw its jobless rate go from 6.9 percent in February to 6.4 percent in March.

The jobless rates for the other 10 counties in the Deep East Texas Workforce Development area are listed below. The February unemployment rates will be in parenthesis. 

Houston County: 7.3 percent (7.7 percent)

Jasper County: 8.2 percent (8.8 percent)

Newton County: 9.6 percent (10.3 percent)

Polk County:  6.8 percent (7.3 percent)

Sabine County: 11.5 percent (12.9 percent)

San Augustine County: 8.4 percent (9.7 percent)

San Jacinto County: 5.8 percent (6.1 percent)

Shelby County 5.9 percent (6.4 percent)

Trinity County: 5.8 percent (6.4 percent)

Tyler County: 8.0 percent (8.7 percent)
