Proud of East Texas: Caldwell Zoo Easter

Posted: Updated:
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Tyler's Caldwell Zoo, one of the top zoos of its size in the country, began in a back yard with cast off Easter bunnies, chicks, and ducklings.

D.K. Caldwell loved children and established a play school at his home. Soon his back yard was filled with "donated" Easter animals.

Other animals were added in time and eventually the Caldwells had to move their menagerie to another location.

In 1953, Caldwell Zoo opened in its present location at 2203 Martin Luther King Boulevard in Tyler. The zoo attracts over 300,000 visitors annually..
