LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Employees at the Joseph House got a big surprise Wednesday afternoon as members of Angelina College's Rotaract Club presented them with a big check of funds they received during the "Rock the Flock" fundraiser.
The check was for $6,624, which is nearly $3,000 over the group's original goal.
"We're super excited about how it went. It went above and beyond whatever I could ever imagine and the community really embraced it. That's what I'm most proud of," said Jennifer Ogden, the president of the rotaract club. "My girls worked hard and their families, and my family, all of our families who sacrificed a lot of time with us, patience, late dinners. But, in the end it was worth it."
In early April, the club began setting out pink flamingo's in the dead of night or early morning in people's yards. Around the neck of the flamingo's was a ransom note saying "You've Been Flocked." In the note, it let people know about the fundraiser to help out the end-of-life care facility.
63 houses in Angelina County were flocked, Ogden said, and one is still currently flocked.
"I'm proud of all my girls and what we did. I'm very proud. It makes me feel good to know that we had a part in doing something like this," Ogden said.
Ogden says the "Rock the Flock" campaign will now be an annual event for Joseph House.
