RAINS COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
A Rains County man is still upset about a sheriff's deputy shooting his family dog while responding to a burglary call.

Cole Middleton says his family called the sheriff's office to report someone had broken into their home and stolen several items, including guns. The deputy who responded, Jarred Dooley, said he felt threatened by the dog so he had to shoot it.

In video Cole Middleton shot on a cell phone, you can hear a passionate discussion wherein both Middleton and Deputy Dooley explain their positions to DPS officers who arrived after Dooley called for backup.

Deputy Dooley says, "I feel bad about shooting your dog. I had no choice. I wasn't gonna get bit, ok?" Middleton can be heard saying, "My dog, when you pull up and no one's here she might bark, sure." "You're invading her property! But, she wasn't gonna bite you. She's never bit anybody." Deputy Dooley states that his dash cam video will support his statement."

The Rains County Sheriff's office issued a statement offering it's sympathy for the Middleton family's loss and explaining that it is reviewing its policy regarding how to handle dogs encountered on calls.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
