CHALMETTE, LA (WVUE) -

St. Bernard Parish President David Peralta has bonded out of jail after being arrested on sexual assault charges.

Peralta walked into court alone Thursday morning, leaving a little while later to head to the parish jail.

A grand jury on Wednesday indicted Peralta on one count of sexual battery after listening to testimony from Peralta's estranged wife and several other people.

A judge issued an arrest warrant on the count of sexual battery. Peralta's attorney, Steven London, said the parish president would be taken to jail, processed and released as soon as authorities completed the paper work.

"This charge will be hard fought," London said.

He said he does not expect this to affect Peralta's job as parish president. "This is his personal life," London said.

Bond was set at $20,000.

Sharon Peralta says the parish president restrained her and raped her in October. David Peralta claims the sex was consensual.

"I am relieved that after all the testimonies the Grand Jury heard yesterday that they handed down an indictment for sexual battery for what he did to me on my birthday!  My family and I can begin a healing process that will take some time," Sharon Peralta said in a statement sent by her attorney.
